Methods & Sampling

Dataset acquisition description

This dataset contains a compilation of CTD bottle data from the R/V Roger Revelle's Indian Ocean cruise RR2201. Raw HEX files were first converted and surface soak removed. The resulting bottle files were then compiled for bulk QA/QC in tandem with a compiled downcast data file (see "Related Datasets" section on this page for associated dataset "CTD downcast from RR2201").

Primary and secondary sensors for temperature and salinity were compared and found to have no significant discrepancies. Only primary sensors were included in the final dataset.

Fluorescence data were calibrated based on a linear regression between recorded fluorescence and extracted Chlorophyll-a taken from discrete samples throughout the cruise.

All other sensors use calibration coefficients provided and are otherwise unverified.

Generic Description:

The Sea-Bird SBE 911 plus is a type of CTD instrument package for continuous measurement of conductivity, temperature and pressure. The SBE 911 plus includes the SBE 9plus Underwater Unit and the SBE 11plus Deck Unit (for real-time readout using conductive wire) for deployment from a vessel. The combination of the SBE 9 plus and SBE 11 plus is called a SBE 911 plus. The SBE 9 plus uses Sea-Bird's standard modular temperature and conductivity sensors (SBE 3 plus and SBE 4).
