Hydrogen sulfide (H2S): A sulfur hydride consisting of a single sulfur atom bonded to two hydrogen atoms. A highly poisonous, flammable gas with a characteristic odor of rotten eggs, it is often produced by bacterial decomposition of organic matter in the absence of oxygen.
