The correlation coefficient is a statistical measure of the strength of a linear relationship between two variables. The correlation coefficient of two variables in a data sample is their covariance divided by the product of their individual standard deviations. It is a normalized measurement of how the two are linearly related. This may be R2, Spearman's, Kendall's, polychoric, Pearson's, Matthews, or others.
