Description

Ammonium concentrations were derived using the fluorometric method described by Holmes et al., (1999) incorporating amendments suggested by Taylor et al., (2007)

Methods & Sampling

Sampling and Analytical Methodology:
50ml per sample drawn in duplicate from CTD mounted Niskin bottles. Samples for background fluorescence and matrix effect corrections per proceedures described in Taylor et al. (2007). Duplicate samples analysed for all depths. Typically 6 depths per cast were sampled, in the range of 0-100m. Standard deviation values included with dataset.

Samples were analysed underway using a Turner Trilogy fluorometer (model #7200-000) with Turner UV fluorescence module (7200-041). Limit of detection was typically ~0.01uM NH4.

Equations used to derive concentrations as explained in Taylor et al (2007)

Initial quality control measures include omission of suspect or outlier standard values and blanks, and suspected contaminated samples. May be subject to further minor corrections. Current version release date: 28 March 2013.

The Sea-Bird SBE 911 plus is a type of CTD instrument package for continuous measurement of conductivity, temperature and pressure. Generic Description:

A Niskin bottle (a next generation water sampler based on the Nansen bottle) is a cylindrical, non-metallic water collection device with stoppers at both ends. The bottles can be attached individually on a hydrowire or deployed in 12, 24, or 36 bottle Rosette systems mounted on a frame and combined with a CTD.
