Description

Data have been submitted to BCO-DMO and are currently being processed (2019-10-10).

Methods & Sampling

Aerosol samples were collected by Cliff Buck (Skidaway Institute of Oceanography) and William Landing (Florida State U.) using a high-volume aerosol sampler (Tisch 5170V-BL) as described by Morton et al. (2013) from the US GEOTRACES intercalibration efforts. This aerosol sampler used acid-washed Whatman 41 filters to collect replicate bulk aerosol samples for TEI analysis.

Aerosol filters were solubilized using the nitric-perchloric acid reflux digestion procedure described by Cutter (1985) but using a microwave digestion unit. The digestion solutions were analyzed using the selective hydride generation method given in Cutter (1978, 1985). The detection limit for aerosol Se, assuming an average filtration volume of 180 m^3, was 0.002 pmol/m^3, with an accuracy of 85±17 % recovery of the BCR 277R estuarine sediment standard reference material (3s, n=19) and a precision of 11% (RSD) at 0.002 pmol/m^3.

Data Processing Description

Only one filter was digested per station, but the digestion solutions were analyzed in triplicate and means computed. Standard additions of selenite were used for daily calibration on a representative sample and its slope applied to subsequent samples.
