Dilution Media
Media Preparation: Seawater was filtered through a 0.2 um cartridge filter followed by a 0.2 um Stericap (Millipore) filter, and vitamins and trace metals were added as in f/2. Nitrate (NO3: 58.9 uM), phosphate (PO4: 3.6 uM) and silicic acid (Si(OH)4: 53.5 uM) prepared as in f/2 were added using a 0.2 um syringe filter. Because the seawater contained nutrients, the initial concentrations in the media were slightly higher (72 ? 5 uM NO3, 3.8 ? 0.5 uM PO4, and 54 ? 4 uM Si(OH)4). The carbonate chemistry was adjusted as necessary by adding HCl, NaHCO3, and Na2CO3 (closed system approach) .
